How much does a retaining wall cost per metre in Toowoomba?
It depends on the material, the height, and how much drainage and footing work the site needs — a low timber garden-bed wall and a two-metre engineered concrete sleeper wall are very different jobs. The honest answer is we'll give you a firm price once we've seen the block. That's what the free site visit is for.
Do I need council approval for a retaining wall?
Generally, walls over about a metre need engineering and building approval here in Queensland, and walls close to boundaries or carrying extra load can trigger it too. Lower garden walls often don't. We work this out for you and handle the approvals where they're needed.
Which material lasts longest?
Concrete sleeper and sandstone both go the distance — concrete for sheer toughness and low maintenance, sandstone for natural good looks that weather well over decades. Timber's the shortest-lived of the three.
Timber vs concrete sleepers — which should I pick?
Timber's cheaper and looks soft and natural, so it's great for low garden beds. Concrete sleepers cost a bit more upfront but last far longer, handle height and load better, and barely need maintenance. If it's a structural wall or anything with a bit of height, we'd steer you toward concrete every time.
How important is drainage, really?
It's the whole ballgame. Water building up behind a wall is what pushes most failed walls over. Proper ag-pipe, geofabric, aggregate backfill and weep holes let that water escape — get the drainage right and the wall stays put. Get it wrong and even a well-built wall won't save you.
How long does installation take?
A small garden wall might be a day or two. A larger engineered wall on a sloping block, with drainage and footings and approvals, takes longer. We'll give you a clear timeframe with your quote so you know what to expect.
